Dentures Q&A

What are dentures?

If you have teeth missing, dentures are an effective way to restore tooth function and appearance.

Dentures are removable dental appliances made to look like your natural teeth and gum tissue. They work in the same way as your natural teeth, allowing you to chew, bite, and speak unimpaired.

The team at Advanced Dentistry of Philadelphia offers the latest dental technologies — including digital X-rays, which reduce radiation exposure by up to 90% — when creating and fitting dentures to provide the best, most comfortable fit.

What are the different types of dentures?

Depending on how many teeth you have missing and the condition of those that remain, your provider recommends complete or partial dentures.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures fit in and around your existing teeth to replace any gaps left by missing teeth. They also help to maintain jaw and facial structure stability by preventing your natural teeth from shifting into the spaces left by those missing.

Complete dentures

You get full dentures when you have no teeth in your dental arch — either through natural tooth loss or by choosing to have any remaining teeth removed. Complete dentures can be immediate or conventional.

If you choose to have your remaining teeth removed, an immediate complete denture is made in advance so that your dentist can place the dentures at the same time as extraction, although you need to return for adjustments once your mouth has healed.

Conventional dentures are made after your teeth have fallen out or been removed and the gums have healed. This process takes 4-6 weeks, and you're without teeth during this time.

The in-house specialists at Advanced Dentistry of Philadelphia work with you to help you feel informed and confident about your procedure.

What does getting dentures involve?

Denture fittings take place over several appointments spanning several weeks. The team at Advanced Dentistry of Philadelphia uses an iTero® scanner to create highly accurate impressions and measurements to create your custom dentures.

After the initial fitting, you may have to return several times to ensure shape, fit, and color match. Once you and your dentist are happy with the fit, they place the final denture and give you concise care instructions.

You should continue to have twice-yearly dental visits to maintain gum health and monitor your dentures.
